Is the gap between music and the printed word insurmountable? For Wesley Eisold, the former lead singer of American Nightmare and Some Girls, making the leap is all in a days work. Eisold has launched Heartworm Press, a publishing company that releases media as diverse as a double 12 inch by the experimental outfit from Tokyo, Nisennenmondai, to books of poetry by J.W. Buckley. A keen sense of graphic design is what links all the seemingly divergent output from Heartworm. Whether intended for reading or listening, each release from Heartworm is a visually pleasing package.
Indestructible Wolves of the Apocalypse Junkyard by Max G. Morton, Heartworm’s latest, is a group of seven stories that drag it’s reader through suburban sprawl into the underbelly of a gritty New York in the ‘80s. Through clenching prose, Morton describes love affairs fueled by heroin in coldwater flats, arsonist skinheads, and gunfights with cops. What more can you really ask for? In addition to the vivid stories, Mark McCoy lends some illustrations to Indestructible Wolves. Word to the wise: The first edition is limited to 500 copies so check for it soon.
