To survive the drought caused by the Writers Guild strike last year, most television networks re-uped with reality shows. And it makes sense. You don’t need any clever scripting to get washed up celebrities to murder the tango. Now that the strike is over, however, if TV viewers weren’t already painfully inundated with altered and recorded reality, they will be soon. With audiences getting bored of reality TV, the next logical step in entertainment would be a walkthrough reality show.
The folks at Scion made their way to this conclusion and teamed up with AM radio to commission a half dozen artists for a residency in a Baltimore townhouse that will have also have gallery openings 3 times a week. The reality tv audiences can now rise the ranks in culture and watch the artists perfecting their craft or discuss the boundaries (or lack thereof) between fine art and design in a room designed by Shop Gentei. Surely, the spectators will grow tired of all the highbrow art snobbery and instigate drama between the artists, but in the real world, politeness gets thrown out the window like dope during high speed police chase. The artists will probably get into a messy paint fight, and on the last day of the residency, April, 18th, there will be a house meeting where everyone discusses how they felt disrespected.
